A no-nonsense look at CBD and vaping

Vapingbase / A no-nonsense look at CBD and vaping

For somebody who isn’t familiar with either CBD or vaping, starting out can seem a little daunting. There are so many vaporizers with different functions to choose from and so many e-liquids purporting certain benefits. However, once you get to grips with all this information, the world of vaping becomes much more exciting, with a ton of innovative products which make medicating with CBD not just therapeutic, but enjoyable too.

The cannabis world has been captivated by cannabidiol (CBD) of late – the non-intoxicating compound is even outshining its fellow cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). That’s because CBD won’t make you feel high, stoned or cognitively impaired. Instead, CBD helps to bring about mental and physical equilibrium by balancing the endocannabinoid system, and ensuring the body has an optimum ‘endocannabinoid tone’.

The science on smoking is out there and it’s not pretty. Tobacco and cannabis smokers have searched for another option, and now they have one in vaping. E-liquids don’t produce the tar, carcinogens or free radicals that smoke does, and that helps protect both the lungs and the skin. This is because vaping does not use anywhere near as much heats. Cannabinoids do not need to be heated to extreme temperatures where the plant matter burns; merely “cooking” cannabis flower or heating an e-liquid to between 350°F and 450°F is enough to activate CBD and other compounds.

The magic of CBD

CBD was shunted to the side for many years, as the recreational cannabis industry took a gung-ho approach into increasing THC concentrations. As THC levels rose, CBD levels declined, and many of the recreational strains today contain hardly any of this endocannabinoid system-regulating compound. Cannabis in the 21st century is much different to that in the ancient world and even the 20th century. The lack of balance between THC and CBD may be great for recreational users, but it hasn’t helped medicinal users.

But uncovering the endocannabinoid system has helped show us how cannabinoids like CBD work, and it turns out this compound has an essential role. In contrast to THC, CBD doesn’t mimic endocannabinoids and hijack the receptors they bind to but boosts concentrations of these endogenously-produced compounds, so they can optimize the endocannabinoid system as intended.

Because CBD doesn’t induce a high, cannabis naysayers have been unable to dismiss the plant’s healing properties as has been protocol for decades. In the United States, even states like Alabama, which have shown no interest in legalizing recreational weed, have permitted CBD research to help treat epilepsy. The Food & Drug Administration approved a CBD-based drug for the first time in 2018, to help with medication-resistant epileptic conditions.

The therapeutic properties of CBD do not stop there. Pain relief, reduced inflammation and improved neurological health are just a few of the physical benefits of the compound, and CBD can also help to boost mental health by relieving anxiety, depression, insomnia and more.

Various other cannabinoids boast useful medicinal qualities, and terpenes – another set of compounds present in cannabis and other plants – can also offer some benefits. Acceptance of THC may not be so forthcoming, but the prospects look bright for cannabis medicine.

The argument for vaping CBD e-liquid

First off, vaping is pretty cool, and there’s nothing more pleasant than sitting back and taking a long draw, filling the lungs before puffing out a big cloud. But vaping CBD offers crucial advantage from a medicinal perspective. When you orally consume CBD from an edible product, the effects are still powerful, but they don’t come as quickly. Yet when you vape an e-liquid, the relief will start flowing through your body shortly after the first inhale.

Perhaps your reasons for taking CBD are not medicinal per se, but just to help chill out. In that case, what better method than vaping? CBD vaping is better than smoking a cigarette, which constricts the lungs, and even drinking a bottle of beer. CBD will pick your mood up, but substantial alcohol consumption has a depressant effect.

Now, let’s take a closer look at how CBD can be beneficial for the mind and body.

Take care of your mental health with CBD

Society is only now starting to realize that mental health is just as important as physical health, and that mental illnesses can be debilitating. Therefore, it’s a good job that the endocannabinoid system can have a positive influence on our mental health, as scientists have been stumped with mental health solutions for decades.

SSRIs were first prescribed to depression patients in the 1980s, and despite all the progress made in medicine generally since, these drugs are still the go-to option for this mood disorder.

When biologists found the endocannabinoid system, they also discovered anandamide. This endocannabinoid is a neurotransmitter with antidepressant properties that can bind to CB1 receptors to improve mood. Just recently, it was determined that the euphoria of a “runner’s high,” which can be achieved with intensive exercise, is not a natural opiate reaction with endorphins, but a natural cannabinoid reaction, through anandamide.

It turns out that endorphins are blocked from the brain as they can’t permeate the blood-brain barrier. However, anandamide can pass through the barrier and boost mood. A deficiency in anandamide may well be the chemical imbalance that is associated with depression. CBD blocks the FAAH enzyme, which breaks down anandamide, to keep more of this neurotransmitter in the body.

There are several triggers for anxiety, and this mental block can manifest in many ways, but it always leads to paralysis in the mind due to overthinking, which leads to fear and doubt. Many of these emotions are irrational and can be managed by soothing the brain. The GABA neurotransmitter can effectively control anxiety by reducing brain activity. A positive allosteric modulator of the GABA-A receptor, CBD tweaks the bond that GABA makes with this receptor to enhance anxiety relief.

Those with anxiety can often work out when they are likely to experience an attack – for example, someone who has social anxiety is able to predict that a new social setting will likely be bothersome. This is where vaping CBD e-liquid can help. The lightning quick onset of effects can help to stop an anxiety attack as soon as it starts and medicating beforehand can prevent it from being an issue at all.

Improve your physical health with CBD

The available mainstream medicines for chronic pain is, too often, not up to scratch. Opioid painkillers are regularly prescribed to those with extreme pain, but these drugs can be highly addictive. With side effects of nausea, dizziness and confusion common, conventional painkillers are sometimes like opening a Pandora’s box to other issues.

CBD manages pain in a much softer way, without producing any of the harsh side effects which blight opiates. At this stage, how CBD eases pain is somewhat unclear, but cutting-edge research suggests that vanilloid receptor 1 may be involved. This G-protein coupled receptor regulates the body’s sensitivity to pain and heat.

With neuropathic pain coming in throbbing waves, patients cannot afford to spend an hour or longer waiting for relief. Once again, CBD e-liquid helps to ease symptoms in quick time.

It’s time to start vaping CBD

CBD is here, and it is high time that we all considered maintaining our endocannabinoid systems. It may not be on the lips of mainstream medical experts yet, but this revolutionary research is challenging many of the preconceived notions that biologists and doctors hold about the body. Supplementing the endocannabinoid system regularly with CBD ensures that enough anandamide and 2-AG (another endocannabinoid) is present to keep the network running smoothly.

We are entering a new era with cannabis medicine and getting high is no longer a requirement. Perhaps you’re already a vaper – if so, adding CBD to the mix is just a natural progression!
