But there’s actually nothing complicated about vape pens. You just need to know the basics to understand what is hiding behind that magic.

So, how does a vape pen work? Let’s find out.

What Is a Vape Pen?

Vape pens (also known as vaporizers) are long, thin devices that look like sleek and high-tech pens (surprise, surprise!).

What’s great about vape pens is that they come in an extremely wide variety of models and designs. There are simple one-color options, and there are bright designs as well. Some of them are more powerful and allow for customization, while others come with a minimal set of features.

Even though vaping is not completely risk-free, it is 95% safer than traditional smoking.

And while you already know that vaporizers are used for vaping, here’s the kicker:

They use different materials.

There are models suitable for e-liquids (also known as e-juices), dry herbs, essential oils, waxy concentrates, and CBD oils. As of now, e-liquids remain the most popular, most frequently used vaping material among the diversity of options.

What Is E-Juice?

One of the reasons why vaping is so popular is the variety of e-juice flavors one can try. There are literally hundreds of brands and flavors available. So, there’s definitely a suitable option for every user.

Now, e-juices usually have the same base, which makes up around 90% of this vaping material. Typically, manufacturers use the combination of Vegetable Glycerin and Propylene Glycol (the rest is flavorings).

But here’s the deal:

Because these two components have different properties, their ratio influences the overall flavor and performance of every e-juice.

Let me explain.

Vegetable Glycerin (VG) is much thicker than Propylene Glycol (PG) and has a subtle sweet taste. Therefore, e-juices that have more VG tend to produce more clouds and can have a sweeter flavor.

On the other hand, Propylene Glycol (PG) is thinner and neutral in terms of flavor. It makes vape juices taste cleaner and richer while producing thinner clouds and leaving less residue inside the device.

Now, many e-juices contain nicotine too. That’s what makes vaping suitable for people who want to quit smoking. One can start with a vape juice that has high levels of nicotine and gradually reduce the nicotine strength to get rid of your addiction. And once they get there, they get to enjoy countless nicotine-free e-liquids and various flavors.

For instance, the most popular flavors are:

  • Deserts (like cherry pie or cheesecake);
  • Menthol and mint;
  • Pure tobacco;
  • Fruits;
  • Candy (gummy bears, cotton candy, etc.);
  • Beverages (coffee, cola, and so on).
Many vape pens have a power button and a light indicator. Some devices require you to press the fire button multiple times to set up your vape pen in a certain way. And the light indicator will help you see what setting you have chosen. It’s important to read the instructions first in order to know how your particular model operates.

There are also special e-juices that contain CBD oils. They are called CBD vape oils or CBD e-liquids. They also come in a variety of flavors and are mostly used to help people deal with countless symptoms and health issues. Generally, it isn’t hard to get CBD oil, but you need to know the restrictions of the state you live in.

So, How Do Vapes Work?

I believe you’ll easily understand how vaporizers work once you look at their construction:

  • A battery. Its function is to power your device.
  • An atomizer. This is a heating element that actually turns the e-juice into vapor. An atomizer contains a coil (sometimes more than one, depending on the model), which is powered by the battery. The coil heats up to a certain temperature, and because it’s placed right near the vape juice, it makes the e-liquid vaporize.
  • A sensor. Now, in different models, sensors serve specific purposes. If your vape pen is activated by your inhales, a sensor detects each draw and activates the battery and, consequently, the atomizer. On the other hand, if your device has a power button, a sensor detects when you press is and, again, activates the battery.
  • A tank (or a cartridge). This is where your e-juice is “stored”. If your device has cartridges, they can either be disposable or refillable. Vape tanks are always refillable. Of course, both tanks and cartridges can be detached from the device for cleaning.
  • A mouthpiece. It’s a part through which the vapor actually gets into your mouth. The most popular mouthpiece materials are glass, ceramic, rubber, and plastic.
