We all know why squonking is so widespread these days.
It delivers the benefits of dripping without the need to actually drip!
Isn’t that amazing?
Today, we are going to take a look at one of the most popular squonk mods, the Driptech DS Dual 18650 by 528 Custom Vapes. Let’s see what it has to offer.
A Brief Intro to Squonking
Before we proceed with this Driptech DS Dual 18650 review, we should probably ensure you know what squonking really is. I mean, you want to know why so many vapers switch to it, don’t you?
Now, the term “squonking” might sound like a foreign word to a vaper, who is only starting their journey. But there is nothing alien about this process.
Squonking is a vaping method, which involves using a special e-juice bottle and sending the vape juice up into your atomizer through the bottom-feed connection pin. All you have to do is squeeze the bottle, wait a couple of seconds for the e-juice to soak into the wicks, press the fire button, and vape.
You can probably see now that squonking works pretty much like dripping, you just deliver the e-juice not from the top of your atomizer but from the bottom. When squonking, the wicks get soaked nicely in the e-juice, which kind of mimics the dripping method.
Here’s the kicker though:
Dripping requires you to constantly, well, drip.
At the same time, a squonk bottle can hold a lot of e-juice (usually 6, 8, or even 10 ml), which means prolonged vaping sessions without the need to open the atomizer and drip onto the wicks every couple of puffs.
What you need to remember is that the majority of modern squonk mods are unregulated. This means, if you don’t have enough experience, this vaping method is not for you. You need to know everything about the mech mods’ safety, coil resistance, coil building, the Ohm’s law, wattage, voltage, and so on. Mechanical mods can be really dangerous, so don’t be in a hurry to start using them. Give yourself some time to learn everything there is to know.
A Quick Preview
To start our Driptech DS Dual 18650 Mod review, let’s take a quick look at its main specs and features:
- fully mechanical mod;
- takes dual 18650 batteries;
- anodized aluminum construction;
- parallel configuration;
- 10 ml squonk bottle capacity;
- gold-plated copper internals;
- top fire button (Delrin);
- 510 spring-loaded pin;
- fits the atomizers up to 24 mm in diameter.
Build Quality and Appearance
The first thing I want to talk about in my Driptech DS Dual 18650 review is its interior and build quality. These are the first things you notice when you purchase your vaping device. The second you take it in your hands, you can understand (in the majority of cases) whether you like it or not.
Let’s start with the appearance. The Driptech DS mod comes in a variety of colors, including black, red, blue, green, purple, and brushed silver. This model looks very smooth, clean, and sleek. There are no sharp edges. Overall, this mod features a very soft cutout, which makes it look neat.
It feels great in the hand too. First of all, the finish is top quality. Additionally, this mod has a rather ergonomic shape. It isn’t too narrow and lies comfortably in the hand. It’s not too big, not too small, just in the perfect middle.
Because the Driptech DS is made of aluminum, it is more lightweight than its stainless steel brothers. However, it still feels solid and sturdy. All the parts, O rings, and screws are snug and tight. There are no wobbly parts, which promises durability and reliability in use.
The one-piece aluminum body houses a 10 ml squonk bottle. It’s very squishy and easy to use. However, it’s not very thin either and has a rather rigid feel to it. There is a stainless steel straw, which delivers the e-juice to the top connector. The bottle is secured in place with the help of a large thumbscrew, which is super easy to remove and put back in place.
As for the battery door, it takes two large screws to stay secured. This might be a real drawback for someone, especially for those dangerous situations when the batteries start to malfunction and you need to get rid of them as fast as possible.
The fire button is placed on the top of the mod. It is made of Delrin and feels rather springy. It does have a slightly crunchy feel when operating since it rubs against its Delrin housing. I would really like the button to operate more smoothly, but that crunchy feel does not influence the mod’s performance, so this isn’t really a big drawback.
When using your Driptech DS Dual 18650 Mod, you might notice a teeny tiny gap between the mod’s top and the atomizer. This happens mainly to RDAs with a smaller diameter. You see, the mod’s top has a bit of a rounded edge, which creates that small gap. However, it does not affect the performance whatsoever. And it isn’t that noticeable either. Just something for you to consider, especially if you are a picky user.
Design and Features
This is a mechanical mod, as you already know. It features the parallel battery configuration, so the positives always go in first. The Driptech DS Dual Mod has a built-in battery polarity protection, so, even though it’s a mech model, you still get a nice safety feature.
Because this is a dual mod, it works great with lower resistance builds. It kind of splits the amp load from the atomizer, which allows for a lower resistance and works as another safety feature (of some sort).
All the contacts have a 24K gold coating for an improved conductivity. The mod features the 510-thread connection, which works with all squonking pins. Obviously, you need to use it with a bottom-fed drip atomizer.
Keep in mind, though:
There are not many pre-built drip atomizers that are also squonk-enabled. Therefore, if you are a beginner, using this Driptech DS Dual Mod might not be the best idea. You need to learn how to build your coils first and familiarize yourself with all the safety rules.
The mod is designed to work with atomizers up to 24 mm in diameter. However, I feel like a 25-mm RDA will look just fine on the top of the Driptech DS Dual 18650. It will probably overhang a bit, but not too much. So, if you prefer larger atomizers, I think you can still try using them with this mod.
This is one of the most important aspects of my Driptech DS Dual 18650 Mod review. Performance is what we appreciate the most about our vaping devices. No matter how cool a mod might look or what advanced features it has, if it shows mediocre performance, you ditch it.
So, you might be wondering “How good is Driptech DS?”
Let me just tell you:
It’s really good.
Performance-wise, it will pleasantly surprise you. This mod allows for very thick and large clouds. Because it’s great for low resistance builds, the vapor quality it produces is simply exceptional.
Another great thing about this model is that it allows no misfires. Although the fire button is not smooth enough (at least to my personal liking), it works effectively every time.
As for the flavor quality, here’s the deal:
It will depend on your DRA and the e-juice.
However, you should know that the Driptech DS mod is powerful enough to reveal your e-liquid’s flavor to its fullest, retaining its crispness and all the notes. It allows for different builds, so you can experiment and find the perfect setup for your desired vape.
Another thing you should know is that this mech mod produces a rather warm vapor. It is pleasant and not too warm; however, I realize that not all users enjoy that kind of vapor.
Ease of Use
There’s nothing complex about using the Driptech DS Dual 18650 Mod (of course, if you are an experienced user and know all the safety rules).
The vaping process is very simple:
You fill the squonk bottle, secure it in place, give it a good squeeze, press the fire button, and vape. It couldn’t be easier. The squonk bottle is quite large, so you can enjoy longer vaping sessions.
If, for any reason, you need to disassemble the mod (either to replace some parts or to clean the insides of the device), just use the Custom Vapes tool, which comes with the mod. Disassembling the device and putting everything back together is super easy, so there’s no need to worry. All the screws work smoothly. You don’t even have to make too much effort.
Squonking is a great substitute for dripping. This vaping method allows users to enjoy just as good vapor quality as they would do with dripping. However, squonking eliminates the need to constantly take out your e-juice bottle and drip the liquid onto the coils and the wicks. Squonking saves your time and makes vaping a bit more effortless.
What Comes in a Box
The set of accessories that comes with the Driptech DS Dual Mod includes all the necessities. You will get your 10 ml e-juice bottle (although some online stores include 2 bottles in the purchase), a hex screwdriver, 2 travel inserts and bottle caps, a set of extra screws and O rings, a firmer spring for the fire button, 2 spare magnets, and a Custom Vapes contact tool.
That tool, by the way, will come in very handy when you decide to disassemble your mod to clean the internal stuff. The tool is super easy to use and makes the whole process even more fuss-free, which I (and many other users) appreciate very much.
Pros and Cons
Whenever I am testing a new device, I try to be as picky as possible and find all of its flaws. Because to get the full picture, we need to consider both the drawbacks and the benefits. Therefore, let’s look at the Driptech DS Dual 18650 Mod and see what strong sides and imperfections it has.
Let’s start with the good stuff:
- Great build quality;
- Works on two batteries (while the majority of mech mods typically support only one battery);
- Large juice bottle;
- Super easy to use;
- Nice and sleek design;
- Performs great, with large and thick clouds;
- Allows for low-resistance builds;
- Good battery life;
- Comes with a very convenient tool;
- Great value for money.
Now, moving on to the drawbacks:
- The fire button is placed at the top and might be uncomfortable to press on. You can use your pinky as a leverage (of some sort) to give your hand more stability and to press the fire button with your thumb more easily;
- The battery door is secured with the screws. This can be a huge drawback in an emergency, for instance, when the batteries start smoking. Instead of snapping the door open (if it were magnetic) and throwing the batteries away, you will have to get rid of the whole mod unit;
- The parallel configuration does not allow for the increase of the resistance;
- The fire button could operate more smoothly;
- Not suitable for beginners.
If you need a worthy exemplar for your vaping collection, the Driptech DS Dual 18650 Mod will definitely become a great addition. Despite some minor flaws, it has a lot to bring to the table. I am sure that its quality build, ease of use, and exceptional performance will win you over!
