Best Mechanical Mods in 2017-2018: Top Brands to Consider

Vapingbase / Best Mechanical Mods in 2017-2018: Top Brands to Consider

In my neighbourhood, I’m the guy that makes the streets look like a scene from Stephen King’sThe Mist”.

How can you do that yourself?

No, it’s not just about vaping. It’s about choosing the right device for vaping.

I spend a lot of time trying out different devices that will help me get the biggest and tastiest clouds

…and today I’ve prepared a neat list of 8 best mechanical mods that proved to be a worthy addition to my collection. Care to take a look?

A basic mechanical mod features rather simple construction. It is usually a tube or a box made of metal, for instance, stainless steel, aluminum, or brass. There’s always a firing pin, which allows the current of the battery to attach the atomizer, making the coils heat up and vaporize the e-juice

The main difference between mechanical and regulated mods is that the former don’t contain any circuit boards or wiring. Due to a large amount of power they produce, it’s advised to pair mechanical mods only with rebuildable atomizers. It’s also crucial to understand battery safety and the Ohm’s law

There are a lot of reasons behind why this item deserves a place on the list of the best mechanical mods. First of all, the manufacturer really makes you feel like they care: the packaging, the useful carry case, the trendy shield logo engraving – all of these elements make this mod look special. Add that to a surprisingly reasonable price for the power you get, and there’s not much more you can ask for.

Now, if you’re anything like me, then you also appreciate the effort that a brand puts into the design of the device. And this mechanical mod is a manifestation of class and luxury. The copper firing button and the black coated shaft really go well together. The mod itself has a unique shape that is more comfortable to hold than most pipe-like mods.

Mechanical mods are the perfect choice for experienced vapers. They allow you to immensely improve the battery life and the overall performance of your device compared to other kinds of mods

Performance-wise, this item is one of the most hard-hitting mods I’ve tried (and I have tried a lot of them, to be honest). During the time I spent using this device, I haven’t once had a misfire. The switch works smoothly, as the mod feels like a natural extension of your hand.

Now, let’s take a look at the defining pros and cons of this device:

Pleasant to the touch

Stylish design

Great performance

Big clouds

Reasonable price for such power capacity

If you’re not careful, the coating can get damaged rather easily

May be not the safest model for beginners

Why is this device on the list of the top-rated mechanical vape mods?

Simply put, this is the nicest looking mech mod I have ever owned. This item really looks like a work of art and makes you feel like a cloud-creating maestro. Not only that, but it also has a potentiometer, which makes it a great choice if you’ve never used a mechanical mod before.

Because this additional feature allows you to regulate the voltage that goes to your device, thus preventing any potential troubles you may have. I feel like this model represents the perfect mix of a mechanical and a regulated mod. The device also includes a small LED that is useful for letting you know when it’s powered on and warns you about any errors.

However, even if this model didn’t include all the other cool features, it should earn a place in your collection just because of how elegantly designed it is. The cool artwork is paired with luxurious metal plates, and the wooden frame is just very pleasant to hold in your hand. This model is also very lightweight, and the fire button is arranged perfectly, making you feel like you’re using a lighter.

Now, another important thing I want to mention is, of course, the performance of this little device. Just like its design, the way this mod works did not disappoint me. Depending on the resistance of the atomizer and your personal adjustments, you will be able to create the clouds of practically any size. It fires up rather fast, so you’ll fill the room with vapor in just a few seconds. Sounds great, doesn’t it?

Now, turn your attention to the pros and cons of this item:

Great battery life

Satisfyingly hard-hitting

Aesthetically pleasing design

Useful potentiometer

Ergonomic shape

Very lightweight for its size

You might not get the color-scheme you like

The top plate can get too hot at low builds

Mediocre battery

This device definitely belongs on the list of the best mechanical mods due to its hard punch and cloud chasing capability. I would especially recommend it to you if you’re an experienced user who wants to take vaping to the next level.

The first thing that pleasantly surprised me in this item was the design. This mod has a cool matte metal look and makes you feel like you’re holding a bullet. And I don’t know about you, but I sometimes like to feel formidable when I vape.

Mechanical mods are great for customization. Whether you want to produce cool or warm vapor or to change the intensity of the flavor, a mechanical mod doesn’t have any limits in terms of flexibility

Another nice touch is the “X”-engraved button on the bottom of the shaft. This switch also has a locking function, which is a feature I wish more manufacturers would include. Sometimes it can be way too easy to accidentally press the fire button, can’t it?

It gets even better:

Power-wise, this model is the embodiment of a mechanical mod. In fact, the cloud chasing properties of this device are so great that I’ve even entered a couple of contests with it and won! This model is also completely safe, features all kinds of protection, and provides excellent battery ventilation.

Here are the most important pros and cons you have to consider:

Smooth operation without any misfires

Adequate battery ventilation

Replaceable sleeves

Perfect for cloud chasing

Cool steampunk design

Hard hitter

Intricate cleaning process

May be too long for some users

Another contestant for the right to be called the best mechanical mod is this item by Hellvape. Being very reasonably priced, this model is suitable for almost any user since it is able to deliver excellent performance and huge clouds.

Now, the first thing you are going to notice about this model is its design. This mech mod is very sleek-looking. I personally love how laconic and smooth its design is, with those neat smooth lines and the elegant engraving on the front side. The mod feels rather sturdy in the hand. It is well built, and the finish is very high quality. I doubt it will be scratched in the near future.

The manufacturer claims that this mod was designed specifically for cloud chasing, and I can’t disagree with that. I used it with a couple of different atomizers (thankfully, it allows for versatility in use thanks to the 510 thread and the 24 mm diameter), and the results were great in every case. The clouds turned out to be huge and thick, which is every vaper’s wish.

Another point I want to mention is the fire button. It is located right on the battery door, which can be unscrewed rather easily. The button is sturdy and fires up without a significant delay, which means you will be able to enjoy the sweet vapor right away.

Let’s see the most important pros and cons:

Well built

Looks neat

Hard hitter

Very reasonably priced

The button works very smoothly

Protection precautions

The button makes a squeaky noise from time to time when being pressed on

The next item on our list of the best mechanical mods is this model by SOI, one of the most popular manufacturers. The Shorty model, being a rather compact device, has everything you need to enjoy huge clouds and excellent performance of your mod.

Now, what really makes this mod stand out among other mechanical options is its fire button mechanism. The manufacturer uses their innovative Short Switch technology, which is what managed to win me over when I was testing this device. You see, when you press the button, the contact pin separates the battery’s connection plate (its four parts), which creates a circuit between the battery and the copper build.

What it results in, you might be wondering? Well, this provides you with eight-point contact, perfect for the minimum voltage and excellent performance. The button is extremely responsive. I’m not exaggerating. And the throw is simply amazing.

The battery is what can cause many troubles when using a mechanical mod. Batteries can over-discharge, overheat, and even burst (potentially). Therefore, you must always be careful and attentive. Always make sure that the mod has a lock for the firing button before actually buying it. And don’t forget to use that lock!

One issue to keep in mind:

There is no locking ring on this mod, so don’t forget about it when carrying the device with the battery inside.

I’m not trying to scare you. I mean, I tried carrying the Shorty in my pocket and it didn’t fire even once. Plus, this model features the ample venting system, which serves as a protective technology for the cases of catastrophic battery failures.

Here are the main pros and cons for your consideration:

Excellent build quality

Hard hitter

Great airflow

Protection technology

Excellent fire button mechanism

Fires up fast

Sleek design

No locking ring on the fire button

This device has all the right to be among the best mechanical mods. It looks great, allows for customizability, and provides excellent performance. Everything about this mod, from top to bottom, says “high quality”.

Now, the first thing I’ve noticed about this mod when I opened the packaging was its design. It looks simple, minimalistic, and surprisingly luxurious (even though it’s not that expensive). Moreover, it features the interchangeable design, which means you can put different sleeves on it and transform your mod into something customized according to your taste.

There are too many people who think that a mechanical mod is a simple, care-free device. The truth is it requires more attention and a deeper understanding of how everything works than the majority of other vaping mod types

Another thing that I love about this model is the overall construction. There’s no connective pin, which allows for superb conductivity and extremely thick vapor. There are 4 vent holes that serve as protection mechanisms for battery malfunction. And the airflow is pretty good too, I have to say. This is a very hardhitting device. The fire button acts right away, providing you with an amazingly thick vapor.

The only concern I have is the diameter of this mod. Being 24 mm, it’s not suitable for the largest atomizers. I know, it’s not a big deal. However, some users might want to enjoy their favorite 25mm atomizer, which, in this mod, will overhang greatly.

Here are the major pros and cons to consider:

Very well built

Great conductivity

Minimal voltage drop

Hits hard

Hybrid style

Interchangeable design

Excellent performance

Direct to Atty construction

Vent holes for protection

The diameter might be too small for some users

GeekVape Karma Mod

  • 510 thread
  • Magnetic button
  • Direct connector to prevent power loss
  • Adjustable button to support different types of 18650 batteries

This mod has all the chances to make you fall in love with it. It is reasonably priced, well made, and comes with a hybrid atomizer. This means you get everything you need in just one package (except for the battery, which is not a big deal, though).

The first thing you are going to notice about this mod is its design. The lines make it look smooth and sleek, and the combination of copper and black colors really adds a rich touch to the overall image. The fire button is located at the bottom and features the GeekVape’s traditional logo. The mod isn’t too long, and its diameter can accommodate the majority of atomizers. It feels compact and rather sturdy in the hand.

What really surprised me is the fact that the button is adjustable and can work with different batteries. The battery compartment is insulated with Delrin, which serves to prevent the short circuits. There are also additional vent holes around the base of the Black Ring, which promises even better protection for you.

In terms of performance, this mod did not disappoint me. This little guy is a hard hitter, which fires up instantly and creates super thick vapor. I’m sure it is suitable even for experienced and demanding vapers.

Now, let’s see the main pros and cons:

Very well built, solid copper construction

Looks great

Hits hard

Safe to use, battery compartment is insulated on the inside

Reasonably priced

Direct-to-battery connection for the great conductivity

Adjustable button, works with different batteries

No lock on the fire switch

If I had to explain why this device deserves to be among the top-rated mechanical vape mods in one phrase, it would be “Simplicity in execution.”

The design of this mod is clean, sleek, and can satisfy both male and female vapers. The mod possesses an ergonomically correct shape and feels great in your hand. The large size of the fire button makes it easy to press it from any position. It doesn’t matter if you’re sitting, standing, or casually lying on the couch, you don’t have to move a muscle to start vaping.

Now, this model might be a bit more expensive than you’re used to, but it makes up for it with its unique characteristics. It proved to be great for cloud chasing, and the batteries lasted for an impressive amount of time. So impressive, in fact, that I’ve found myself using the power bank to charge other devices in emergency situations. If you’re one of those people who regularly find their smartphone’s battery dying unexpectedly, it’s certainly worth considering buying this device.

The lack of circuits and wiring allows mechanical mods to last much longer than any other alternatives. As there are no electronics that can cause a malfunction, you don’t have to replace your mod nearly as often

Let’s look at the pros and cons of this model:

Fantastic battery life

Strong punch

Looks good even after months of usage

Ergonomic shape

Can act as a power bank

Four color options available

The design choice isn’t for everyone

Gave too much power to my 0.15 Ohm coil

What Is a Mechanical Mod and Why Should You Use It?

Mechanical mods become more and more popular among experienced vapers these days. This is the type of a vaping design that doesn’t have any electrical components in its construction. It is usually a tube (less often a box) made of metal, which also has a firing pin that connects the battery and the atomizer, making the coils heat up and vaporize the e-liquid. This type of vaping mods is simple, basic, but also potentially dangerous since the battery can malfunction and bust unexpectedly. However, the majority of modern models feature protective mechanisms, so don’t worry too much.

Now, with the overflowing range of adjustable and customizable electrical mods on the market, mechanical ones still keep their popularity. Why? And why should you try a mechanical mod?

The answer is simple:

better vapor, better flavor, and more power

You see, when you vape using the unregulated battery, you can fire your coils up no matter how low their resistance is. This leads to the e-juice evaporating faster, providing stronger and deeper flavor, thicker vapor, and larger clouds.

However, there’s one important thing you must keep in mind. Mechanical mods are not for beginners. I’m not saying that, as a beginner, you are not worthy to try such a device. This is simply the matter of safety. In order to use a mechanical mod, you absolutely must have a solid understanding of how it works as well as know the battery amperes limits and the Ohm’s law.

I don’t recommend using a mechanical mod if you’re a beginner. But if your desire is just too strong and you can’t fight it, at least do thorough research. I mean, very thorough. Just to be on the safe side.

Safety Always Comes First

I know you know what you’re doing. However, we all can be a bit inattentive sometimes. So, I just want to remind you of the basic and the most important safety tips:

  • If you are clumsy sometimes, it’s better to get yourself the model with a protective lock on a firing button. Just in case.
  • Always make sure that your batteries aren’t under- or overcharged. Simply check their volts, and you are good to go. If you draw too many amps from the battery, it might cause some serious safety issues.
  • Clean the air vents regularly. They are your best helpers when it comes to safety and battery’s malfunction. You can simply take the battery out and blow into the mod from the end. This will remove all the dust from the vent holes, allowing them to work effectively.
  • Always pay your attention to the mod’s temperature during vaping. If it starts heating up, that might be a signal that the battery becomes dangerous. You should stop using it right away.

For more battery safety information you can read this guide.

Maintenance Tips and Tricks

Here’s the deal:

If you want your mod to serve you loyally for as long as possible, you need to pay it back by taking good care of it. So, here are some things you can (and even should) do:

  • If your mod is made of stainless steel, you can simply wash its parts with a mild dish soap after disassembling the device. You can also clean the threads with a toothbrush.
  • If your mod is a copper or a brass one, you can use an automotive metal polish to clean it. It’s quite effective.
  • Some users even clean their copper mods with ketchup. Although, it’s not the most effective method.
  • Use only a mild detergent to wash the gold-plated pins.
  • Silver-plated pins can be easily washed by immersing them in hot water with some baking soda dissolved in it.

The Verdict

When it comes to vaping devices, I remind myself of a girl who stands in front of her closet, looks at 20 dresses, and says that she has nothing to wear. Just like that, I am always fascinated by new vaping devices that I test, and still, always feel like I don’t have enough.

When reviewing these 8 mechanical mods, I’ve picked my favorite, which I will definitely add to my never-ending collection. Want to know which one? The Shorty Subzero Mod by SOI. Why? Simply because it managed to impress me the most.

The design is super laconic and minimalistic, which is what I like. This mod is powerful and can hit you very hard. And don’t get me started on its connectivity and the functional fire button. This little device is loaded with everything you need from a good, high-quality mechanical mod. I am sure it will make you as happy as it made me.

What do you personally prefer mechanical mod or box mod? Maybe something newer like pod mod? Feel free to leave a comment below.

Ordered Karma Mod by Geekvape. Nothing to complain about, everything came as expected. Comes with a switchable Karma RDTA/RDA and extra glass tank. The drip tip is a bit short and can get hot. Other than that didn’t see any other disadvantages.

VGod Mech Mod has given me a satiable cloud Mod. Being an addicted vaper, I needed a good Mod with enticing design so i can keep my desire rolling.

The only challenge remain that I have been very careful with the coating to avoid unbearable damage.

Am liking the diameter and the locking switch of the subzero, it makes it quite easy to handle.
Subzero. Replaceable sleeves allow me to switch each sleeve at will. But the intricate cleaning process demoralizes me at the time. Overall experience was good.
